PRINTMAKING WORKSHOPS ON THE MORNINGTON PENINSULA

About Us

“Squid Ink Press was created by artists Rachel Bonnici and Elizabeth Hickey out of a love for printmaking and a desire to make this diverse medium accessible to creatives in and around the Mornington peninsula.

PRINTMAKING WORKSHOPS

Cyanotype

Cyanotype printing is a photographic process in which light sensitive chemicals are applied to paper or fabric. Objects or negatives are placed on the paper/fabric and exposed to either sunlight or a UV light creating a one off print in a distinctive cyan blue.

One day cyanotype workshop

You will learn to mix and apply the photographic chemicals to paper and fabric and create a print by exposing it to the sun or UV light source.

Drypoint

Drypoint is a type of intaglio printmaking technique where the design is made by scratching into a plate (either acetate or metal) with a pointed tool. The print is made by wiping ink into the scratches and running the plate through a press. It is very similar to an etching but made without the use of acids or mordants.
This process delivers much different results than Lino printing. Drypoint creates a range of tones and produces a more nuanced and softer print.

One day drypoint workshop

You will learn to translate a drawing into drypoint using needles and abrasives, how to ink up a plate and print with a press using dampened paper.

Linocut

A Linocut print is a relief printmaking technique where the image is created through carving into a sheet of linoleum using a variety of specialized tools. The Lino is then inked up with a roller and printed either by hand burnishing or run through a press.

Whether it is done in black and white or in colour, Lino prints are bold and graphic.

One day, introduction to linocut workshop:

You will learn how to develop a sketch into a lino print, learn how to carve a block of lino using line and texture, how to ink up a block and to both print by hand (which you can then do at home) and with a printing press to produce your own, unique, monochromatic, fine art print.

Two day, multi block lino workshop

No previous knowledge necessary. You will create your own Lino print using separate blocks for further colours.

Two day, reduction lino workshop

For those with experience in Lino printing. You will create a reduction print adding colour to your image using only the one block through carving away after each colour.

Monotype

Monotype indicates a one-off print. There are many ways to make a monotype, from a simple mark to something layered and complex. This is a workshop devoted to playing around with materials such as gelli plates, acetate, ink and acrylic paints and letting your creativity run amok. It is fun, playful and less intense than other printmaking techniques.

One day workshop

Working with a variety of materials you will create several prints. It is a process that lends itself to quick, dynamic and spontaneous results.

Two day workshop

In this workshop, you will be able to create layers, which allows for a more considered and planned print.

Solarplate Etching

This is another intaglio technique which is both a much easier and less toxic way to make an etching. Using a photopolymer coated plate you expose it to the sun (or UV light) to create an etched image on the plate without the use of acids or mordants. This workshop provides you with methods for creating textures, layering images, transferring photographs, and working with colours to enhance your printmaking skills.

One day solar plate etching workshop

You will learn how to transfer an image or drawing onto a photopolymer coated plate, expose the plate, ink and run through a printing press to create a beautiful etching.
